See how educators across the country transformed their learning environments into spaces that support how students truly learn and connect.

When students feel supported by their environment, learning becomes more natural and more engaging.

Across the country, educators are rethinking what their classrooms can be. Not just spaces for instruction, but environments that shape how students focus, collaborate, and build confidence. Furniture design plays a critical role in that shift, influencing both behavior and engagement.

Through KI’s Classroom Furniture Giveaway, a group of educators brought these ideas to life. With their redesigned spaces now fully installed, these classrooms offer a compelling look at what is possible when environments are created with intention.

Each one reflects real needs, real students, and real outcomes.

In this blog, we highlight four classroom transformations that show how thoughtful design can support engagement, inclusion, and student success.

Igniting Movement, Focus, and Creativity

Hornets Nest Elementary School – Third Grade STEM Classroom

Charlotte, North Carolina

Khadijah Mosely set out to create a classroom that supports the whole student. Her space already included areas for collaboration and independent work, but the furniture itself limited how students could fully engage within those zones.

The previous environment felt static and uninspiring. Students had little opportunity to move naturally or interact with the space in a way that supported their energy and learning styles.

The redesigned classroom introduces flexibility at every level. Mobile tables and adaptable seating allow students to shift between activities with ease, supporting both independent focus and group collaboration. Ruckus chairs move with students, providing a productive outlet for energy and helping students stay engaged rather than constrained.

A dedicated Cogni classroom seating zone adds another layer of support, giving students access to seating that helps them regulate and reset while remaining connected to the classroom environment. Ergonomic design also plays a key role, supporting comfort and sustained focus during more intensive work.

Collaboration now happens more fluidly. Students can move toward one another without disruption, making peer-to-peer support feel natural and immediate.

For Mosely, the transformation is about unlocking potential. “All of the furniture that was placed in here will help to ignite that creativity,” she said.

The result is a classroom that works with students, not against them. Movement supports focus, flexibility promotes engagement, and the environment actively contributes to how students actually learn.

Designing for Belonging, Comfort, and Connection

Thomas Metcalf Laboratory School – Social Sciences Classroom

Normal, Illinois

Andy Goveia approached his classroom redesign with a clear goal. If students do not feel like they belong, they will not fully engage in learning.

The previous space made that connection difficult. It felt overstimulating and disconnected, lacking the comfort and cohesion needed for students to feel at ease.

The new classroom is designed around choice and connection. Collaborative table groupings encourage discussion and shared learning, while lounge areas provide more relaxed spaces for reflection and conversation. Each area offers a different way for students to engage, giving them agency in how they learn.

Zeker modular seating and a two-tiered Clamber seating unit have become natural anchors within the room, drawing students together and creating an informal space for interaction. Throughout the classroom, flexible furniture allows for easy reconfiguration, supporting a wide range of teaching styles and student needs.

The shift is immediate. Students now enter a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and intentionally designed for them. That sense of belonging creates the foundation for deeper engagement.

“I hope that every student finds something in at least one of the spaces where they can say, this is my spot,” Goveia said.

By prioritizing comfort and connection, the classroom now supports not just academic outcomes, but the emotional experience of learning itself.

Creating an Inclusive Environment for Every Ability

Northridge High School – Special Education Classroom

Layton, Utah

Angelyn Obray’s special education classroom serves students with a wide range of abilities, each with unique physical, sensory, and learning needs. The previous setup, with uniform desks and limited flexibility, made it difficult to fully support that diversity.

Her goal was to create a space that adapts to the student, not the other way around. The redesigned classroom offers a variety of seating and table options that allow students to choose what works best for them. Whether that means a structured workspace, a more relaxed seating area, or a tactile experience that supports sensory needs, the environment now provides meaningful choice.

Cogni classroom seating’s integrated sensory elements offer a subtle way for students to self-regulate, helping them stay focused and comfortable throughout the day. Intellect activity tables and Intellect Wave desks with white markerboard worksurfaces encourage active participation, making it easier for students to express ideas and engage with content in a hands-on way.

The layout also prioritizes inclusivity. Students who use wheelchairs can seamlessly join peers in shared seating areas, reinforcing a sense of belonging and community.

“Students can still sit right next to us and feel like they’re a part of that group,” Obray said.

The impact is both academic and personal. Students are more engaged, more comfortable, and more confident in their ability to participate. The classroom now supports independence, interaction, and growth in ways that were not previously possible.

Revitalizing a Library Through Community and Connection

Twin Rivers High School – Library Media Center

Broseley, Missouri

At Twin Rivers High School, the library had long served an important role, but the space itself no longer reflected how students used it or what they needed from it.

The environment felt outdated and underutilized, offering little reason for students to gather, collaborate, or spend time there. At the same time, the school community was navigating the loss of a beloved educator, Holly Johnson, whose presence had once defined the space.

The redesign became an opportunity to reimagine the library as both a functional and meaningful environment.

Today, the space feels entirely different. A variety of settings support multiple ways of learning, from collaborative Ruckus activity tables that encourage group work to more relaxed Zoetry lounge seating that creates comfortable, semi-enclosed areas for independent focus. Each element works together to create a space that feels both flexible and inviting, adapting easily throughout the day for everything from collaboration to quiet study.

Students are returning to the library with renewed interest, drawn in by an environment that feels welcoming and easy to engage with. Some gather with peers to work through assignments, while others find quieter corners that allow for focus and reflection.

“I think the library’s considered the heart of the school because it is sort of the place that pulls all of us together,” Floyd said.

The transformation extends beyond function. Thoughtful design choices help carry forward the legacy of the educator who shaped the space, creating an environment that feels both new and deeply connected to the school’s identity.

The library is once again a central hub, supporting connection, collaboration, and a renewed sense of community.

The Power of Thoughtful Classroom Design in Action

Each of these learning environments is unique, shaped by the needs, goals, and creativity of the educators behind them.

But together, they illustrate something larger. When classrooms are designed with intention, they become active participants in the educational experience. They support movement, encourage collaboration, and create a sense of belonging that allows students to thrive.

These are real classrooms, with real challenges and real results. They show that meaningful transformation is not only possible, but achievable. At KI, we are proud to partner with educators to create spaces that support both teaching and learning in lasting ways.
