KELLYVILLE, Okla. — Local high-schoolers from Kellyville Academy Alternative Education School saw their dream classroom become a reality on Wednesday.
Alternative education teacher Jennifer Childers was one of four winners in a national classroom furniture giveaway from furniture maker KI.
Mrs. Childers was selected from more than 500 teachers and won in a poll of 12 finalists. She won $40,000 worth of furniture.
She designed a classroom that was versatile for her alternate education program. The design focuses on students who have experienced specific challenges or have had difficulties excelling in a traditional classroom.
The students said her design embraces color theory and tactile learning which allows them to transition between arts, sciences, and life skill learning.
100 percent of Mrs. Childers' students come from low-income households and 30 percent are recovered dropouts.
Many of the students said they consider her classroom a second home.
