GREEN BAY (WLUK) - The Green Bay Area Public Schools district unveiled the first of 13 school libraries to get a makeover, thanks to a grant from the Green Bay Packers.
A ribbon cutting took place at Howe Elementary, 525 S. Madison St., with the help ofdistrict superintendent Michelle Langenfeld, KI CEO Dick Resch and Packers president Mark Murphy.
"We knew of the need and technology is changing so rapidly that we knew that a grant like that would make a big difference," said Murphy.
The school's library media center received upgraded technology including a smart board and large flat-panel television, new flexible furniture, new carpet, and a Lego wall. The new learning spaces are designed to engage students, promote innovation and collaboration, and help prepare students for their post-secondary aspirations, according to district officials.
The money is part of $250,000 Packers Give Back Impact Grant awarded to the district.
"These makeovers allow us to re-freshen our libraries, make them relevant to our students and community, and keep them the heart of the learning hob at all the schools," said Vicki Santacroce, GBAPS Coordinator of Library Service.
Work is expected to be complete on three other school libraries in the district before school opens in September--Keller, Doty and Lincoln Elementary schools.
Santacroce says work will continue on libraries at Aldo Leopold, Danz Elementary, East high, Edison Middle, Eisenhower Elementary, Red Smith, Sullivan Elementary, Washington Middle and Webster Elementary. Work on those libraries will be completed throughout the school year.
