LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Big changes could be coming to one teacher’s classroom at Northern Elementary School in Lexington.

Ashley Wilkirson is a finalist, along with two other teachers from Texas, to win a classroom makeover.

"I’m so honored that we have the ability to participate in this competition to try to win new furniture for our school,” says Wilkirson, a STEM teacher at the elementary school.

Wilkirson got the chance to win a classroom makeover worth $40,000.

“It’s also wonderful to have the chance to refresh and make something new of it and have these different opportunities for our students and our community,” adds Wilkirson.

The giveaway presented by KI, a company that manufactures innovative furniture is open to teachers K-12th grade.

Applicants enter the contest by designing their “dream classroom” online.

Wilkirson says the opportunity to change the environment for her students is one she is grateful for.

“We want the layout to be easy to maneuver around, always easy visibility to see different things like that. This furniture can stay and continue to be a part of that growth. I love that idea so much. I want my students to have that for our community, our community is what matters to me and our students matter a lot to me,” she said.

Wilkirson says the community support has been incredible, adding that the phone call telling her she was a finalist was quite the surprise.

The giveaway ends on Jan. 31, and Wilkirson will find out the results on Feb. 2.

“We would be so happy to have your vote to be able to support our school, not just as a city in Lexington, but as a state, we’re the only school in the state participating in this competition. So your vote would mean the world to have,” she added.
