Designing Inspired Educational Spaces

In K-12 education, every space matters. They support engagement, well-being, and belonging for every student while giving educators the flexibility to adapt as teaching evolves. From classrooms to commons, these spaces play a critical role in how students feel, connect, and learn each day.

For more than 70 years, KI has partnered with educators, administrators, districts, and designers to create K-12 environments grounded in research and human-centered design. Our solutions remove barriers, encourage movement, support choice, and foster belonging, helping schools create meaningful learning experiences today and in the future.

Performance Design Considerations

Designing for learning outcomes isn’t about selecting chairs and desks that happen to fit a room, it’s about creating spaces that actively reduce stress, nurture participation, and unlock deeper engagement.

Guided by research and market insights, KI has identified eight Performance Design Considerations that define what student success looks like and allow education teams to iterate toward those results.

ACCESSIBILITY

Removing physical, sensory, and cognitive barriers empowers every student to participate and succeed.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMFORT

Comfort today means supporting varied postures, sensory preferences, and visual calm that reduce dysregulation.

MULTISENSORY MODULATION

Sound, visual load, tactility, and opportunities for motion help students stay regulated and engaged.

ERGONOMICS & MOVEMENT

Ergonomic design links directly to posture, focus, and reduced strain.

PHYSICAL SAFETY & SECURITY

Welcoming finishes and orderly layouts reinforce both physical and psychological security.

EMOTIONAL SAFETY & BELONGING

Reducing visual noise and providing choice help create environments of trust, respect, and belonging.

COMMUNITY & CONNECTION

Design that celebrates identity and encourages collaboration deepens engagement and shared purpose.

SUSTAINABILITY & STEWARDSHIP

Durability and adaptability aren’t only fiscally responsible, they model care for the planet.
