KI Earns National WasteWise Award for Sustainability Initiatives That Help Reduce Packaging Use
GREEN BAY, WIS. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected KI as the 2011 WasteWise Packaging Reduction Gold Achievement Award winner. KI's multi-faceted sustainability program has successfully recycled and reduced 1,580,494 lbs. of industrial waste through material diversion and prevention this past year.
To achieve this significant effort, KI focused on reducing content in product design, using recycled materials, preventing waste during manufacturing processes and diverting material from landfills.
KI previously earned the WasteWise award in 2006, 2008 and 2009. In 2010, KI earned WasteWise Large Business Partner of the Year, which recognized KI's commitment to waste prevention and recycling initiatives, "buy recycled" efforts and activities to promote WasteWise. Through recycling and re-use efforts over the past five years-including wooden pallet recycling and reuse, scrap wood and sawdust eliminations, furniture re-use in tradeshows and showrooms, reduced use of paper and more-KI has saved more than 9.56 million lbs. of industrial waste in its furniture manufacturing.
"We're honored to be recognized with this prestigious award from the EPA," said Tim Heyrman, engineering manager, KI. "Our packaging reduction program and similar initiatives are important to our customers, who emphasize good stewardship of the environment and want to do business with companies that share that commitment."
WasteWise is a free, voluntary EPA program through which organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste and select industrial wastes, benefiting their bottom line and the environment. WasteWise created the Gold Achievement Award in 2005 to recognize its partners' achievements in areas such as climate change, green buildings, product stewardship, and beneficial use of secondary materials.
